Fordingbridge Museum - 10 Years On
"There's nothing like messing about on the river"
31 July / 01 August 2010
An exhibition to celebrate the Museum's tenth anniversary will have as its main feature the Fordingbridge Regatta which came to be known as the Hampshire Henley.
Inaugurated in 1889, the Fordingbridge Regatta was held on the River Avon each August until 1928. At this time there was a rowing and a sailing club. These regattas
were so popular that they attracted people from as far away as London and trains were laid on to bring people to the station at Fordingbridge. They became known as the
Hampshire Henley. It was a very festive occasion, with hundreds of people enjoying the water sports from the illuminated river bank.
The exhibition will be in The Victoria Rooms, Bridge Street, Fordingbridge on Saturday 31st July and Sunday, 1st August 2010 by kind permission of the Victoria
Rooms Trustees. It will be open from 10.30 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. At the same time the Museum in Kings Yard will be open where the
new sign, which is to be unveiled on Friday 30th July, can be seen. The new sign is the work of local sculptor, Michael Turner.
Also in the exhibition will be a Time Line, a film showing of the "Last Train through Fordingbridge", Fordingbridge in wartime with "Make Do and Mend" machines and
many local displays.
Refreshments by the Friends of the Fordingbridge Museum will be on sale on both days
